Tafoya, Camilio – Large Seedpot with Figures and Butterfly (1977)

4.75"w x 2.5"h

$ 850.00

This large seedpot by Camilio Tafoya is from 1977. It is fully polished and fully designed. As with many of his pieces, they were designed to tell a story.  Here, the hole is at the top of the piece and there is a cloud and rain design that is extending out from the opening.  There are human figures carrying wood and corn, grinding corn, and getting water from a river.  The little kids are chasing butterflies.  It is a creative design that fills the top of the piece.  On the side is a single sunflower etched into the clay.  Camilio first began making larger carved pottery like his sister, Margaret Tafoya.  In the 1970s he began making pieces on his own when he was living with his daughter Grace Medicine Flower.  All of the etching on his pieces was done before they were fired so that he was able to get the smooth tan coloration in the background.  The piece is signed on the bottom “Camilio Sunflower Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
