Tafoya, Camilio – Plate with Female Buffalo Dancer (1985)

4.25" diameter

$ 1,200.00

This is one of the few plates we have seen by Camilio Tafoya.  The piece is from 1985.  He made a pair of them at that time, one with a female Buffalo Dancer, and one with a Male Buffalo Dancer.  This plate has the female Buffalo Dancer.  The piece is fully polished on the front and then etched with a Buffalo Dancer as the design.  Note the detail in the feather bustle on her back and the leggings!  The various colors are additional clay slips.  The back rim of the plate is also fully polished and etched with a mountain design.  It is signed on the back “Camilio Sunflower Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Did you know that Camilio Tafoya was a brother of noted potter Margaret Tafoya? He began by making carved pottery and only began making miniatures in the early 1970s.  His etched designs included cultural references along with classic animal imagery.  This plate was featured on the front cover of the book, “Magic in Clay” and also on page 22.  The book is not included.
