Tafoya, Camilio – Red Carved Bowl with Avanyu Design (1960’s)

4.5"w x 3.25"h

$ 225.00

This is an unusual red carved bowl by Camilio “Sunflower” Tafoya.  He was the father of Grace Medicine Flower and Joseph Lonewolf and the brother of Margaret Tafoya.  While he is known for his miniatures beginning in the 1970s, he created carved pottery in the 1960’s.  This bowl is one of the few carved red pieces we have seen.  It is deeply carved with an avanyu as the design.  Interestingly, note how it is carved using the negative space from the bottom of the bowl and not in a band with top and bottom borders!  The bowl is polished and fired red.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Camilio Tafoya”.  It is in good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
