Tafoya, Camilio – Seedpot with Deer and Pueblo Deer Dancers (1994)
This seedpot by Camilio Tafoya is from 1994. It is fully polished and fully designed. It is a charming piece with Pueblo style Deer Dancers. Much like at the actual dances, there is an adult and two children. It’s always fun to watch the excitement and energy of kids when they are the Deer or Antelope Dancers. Over the youngest Dancer there is a rainbow. As the seedpot is turned, there are two realistic deer. The piece is polished red and then etched. There are additional clay colors added to accentuate the designs. Note the detail in the figures. The colors are all added from various clay slips. Camilio was living with Joseph Lonewolf, his son, at the time he made this. Joseph would give him the clay slips to use for the colors. The piece is signed on the bottom “Camilio Sunflower Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
