Tafoya, Celes – 10″ Tall Water Jar with Carved Avanyu (1970s)

6"w x 10.5"h

$ 800.00

Celes Tafoya was a daughter of Legoria Tafoya and a nice of Pablita Velarde and Jane Baca. She often worked in collaboration with her mother, Legoria Tafoya, until her death in 1984.  Later, she also worked with her daughter Evelyn Tafoya. This is a jar deeply carved with a water serpent as the design.  There is a carved band above and below the avanyu and note the complexity of the design.  The neck of the jar is fully polished to a high shine. The jar was traditionally fired a glassy black.  It is signed on the bottom, “Celes”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is one of the largest pieces we have seen by Celes by herself.
