Tafoya, Cresencia – Polychrome Jar with Rain and Snow Designs (1950s)

4"w x 4"h

$ 250.00

Cresencia Tafoya was the mother of noted potters Harriet Tafoya and Annie Baca. This is an exceptional piece of her polychrome pottery (i.e. with more than three colors). The jar is polished red and painted with white, red, and blue clay slips.  The blue-gray color is the most unusual and one that was used most often in the 1950s. The jar has rain, snow, and cloud designs painted across the surface of the piece.  This is one of the few polychrome pieces of her work we have had in the gallery.  The jar was traditionally fired.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Cresencia”.
