Tafoya, Jennifer – Large Pitcher with Koi and Dragonflies

6"w x 4"h

$ 4,500.00

This is one of the few large clay pitchers we have had by Jennifer Tafoya. The shape is elegant with a sharp shoulder and a short neck.  There is a handle that is polished on the outside. The inside of the handle, the rim, and the inside of the pitcher are all slipped with mica.  Creating pieces like pitchers may seem simple, but there is a greater risk of the handle cracking during the drying, polishing, or firing!  The handle is etched with a rain cloud design.  The area above the shoulder has flowers etched into the clay along with a dragonfly. Check out the wings of the dragonfly, which are so delicately etched and almost seem transparent!  The flowers are rooted below the shoulder “under the water”.  The shoulder is etched as if it is the waves of water.  Below the shoulder to the base are three large etched koi.  They are intricately etched and check out the color variations. Just. Wow!  Surrounding the koi are swirling waves.  The waves around the fish are more deeply etched.  Throughout the piece, all the different colors are natural clay slips.  The colorations are dynamic and varied across the surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.  Jennifer continues to be one of the leading innovative potters working today!  She most recently won the “Tony Da Award” for innovative pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2019.
