Tafoya, Jennifer – Square Jar with 11 Piranhas

4"w x 3.25"h

$ 2,000.00

Jennifer Tafoya is known for her clay vessels and also her amazing animal figures.  This jar is square in shape and has an elongated neck.  The entire piece is fully polished and fired a deep black.  The top of the jar has eleven red-bellied piranhas as the design.  They are etched into the clay surface.  Jennifer said this was the first time she had made a piece with piranhas as the design. They turned out quite exceptional!  Each is highly detailed and what is hard to see in the photos is that she used mica on the surface of the fish so that they have a silvery look like scales!  Exceptional!  Ass well, note in the background matte area where she more deeply incised water swirls into the clay.  The edge of the jar has classic PUeblo water designs, much in the style of her father, Ray Tafoya. The bottom of the jar has six cardinal tetras.  All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.
