Tafoya, LuAnn – Red Jar with Mountain Design (2019)

7.5"w x 9"h

$ 3,000.00

The is a  striking jar from LuAnn Tafoya.  She is a daughter of Margaret Tafoya and learned to make the large vessels from her mother.  The jar is a classic shape with a round shoulder and an elongated neck. Around the shoulder, it is fully carved with mountain, rain and cloud designs.  They are deeply carved into the clay and then the entire piece is fully polished and traditionally fired red.  In the recessed (carved away) areas, there is a cream colored clay slip which is applied before the piece is fired.  The last photo shows the clay which is used to fill in the background areas.  The pottery of LuAnn Tafoya is an important continuation of the traditions of her family and the pueblo.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay.
