This is an exceptional early carved bowl by Margaret Tafoya.  The piece is from the 1940s. The bowl is carved with a walking bear paw and rain design.  Note how it is carved using the negative space of the bowl.  Much of Margaret’s work from the 1930-40 era is much more experimental in style than her later work.  This bowl is fully polished and fired a slivery black. It is in exceptional condition for its age and with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It is always exciting to find an early piece of her pottery in such great condition and with a classic design.
