This is a fully polished wide bowl by Margaret Tafoya from the 1960s.  The bowl is coil built and fully polished on the interior and exterior. This is always more difficult as by adding more wet slip to the interior in order to polish the surface, it can end up damaging the exterior.  However, Margaret was masterful at polishing.  While she did not always fully polish her pieces (inside and outside), when she did they are exceptional in appearance.  What makes this bowl so interesting is the interior surface. When it was fired, ash fell onto the bowl and created areas of “gunmetal” coloration.  Margaret would call this the “Appaloosa effect”, as the ash formed spots like those arranged on an Appaloosa horse!  They almost look like stars on a cloudy night.  The spots are arranged around the interior edge and across the center. It certainly adds another dimension to her exceptional pottery!  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
