Tafoya, Margaret – Plate with Painted Avanyu (1950’s)

11.5" diameter

$ 2,800.00

This is a fully polished plate by Margaret Tafoya.  The plate is from the late 1950s.  It is one of her few black-on-black painted pieces and most were done in this time period.  This avanyu is wonderfully intricate in design and flows around the center of the plate.  The design is exceptional with lots of small curves and angles and note the water curls right at the tail of the avanyu!  The back of the plate is also fully polished.  It is fired a deep black and check out the area tot he left of the avanyu’s head, where there is some light metallic speckling from the firing.  Margaret would call this the “appaloosa” effect where there would be metallic (gunmetal) spots on the piece from firing, like the spots on an appaloosa horse.  It is signed on the back in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. There are some light surface scratches which are not unexpected with the age of the piece. Definitely an exceptional piece of historic work by Margaret Tafoya!
