WOW!  It is so exciting to come across a redware wedding vase by Margaret Tafoya from the 1930s.  It is not just that it is an early piece of her work but that it is painted and in overall great condition. So few of these pieces have survived over the past century!  It is coil-built and stone polished.  It is painted red-on-red with a white outline.  This is very unusual for her to paint on pieces, especially in red. However, it was also a very popular style of design style from the 1930s to 50s.  The designs are clouds with lightning and are more complicated than some of her other painted pottery.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”.  This signature is the one she used in the 1930s, which helps us date the piece more accurately.  The wedding vase is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is definitely a piece of historic importance in the work of Margaret Tafoya.
