This is one of the few lidded pieces by Ray Tafoya.  The piece is fully polished and etched. The jar is a tall shape and polished red and green.  The green medallion is etched with a Mimbres style Rabbit animal, but with a long tail.  It is surrounded by rain, cloud, and lightning designs.  The neck has a feather pattern.  The lid is unusual with a stylized maiden with a polished face and matte hair.  All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay with his hallmark, which means “White Mountain”.  It is dated 8/86, which means he probably made it for Santa Fe Indian Market that year.
