Tafoya, Ray – Red Seedpot with Hummingbirds (1983)

1.75"w x 2"h

$ 525.00

This tall seedpot by Ray Tafoya is fully polished.  It has two realistic hummingbirds etched into the clay.  One of them is getting nectar from a flower.  The flower has a single inset turquoise hei-shi bead in the center.  The seedpot is highlighted with green, blue, and white clay slips. As the piece is turned there is a smaller etched area with prayer feathers and a star.  All the different colors are derived from natural clay slips.  Note how many of the designs surrounding the hummingbirds are similar to ones used today by his daughter, Jennifer Tafoya.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is from 1983.  It is signed, “RT” with a mountain, which is his name in Tewa, “White Mountain”.
