This jar by Linda Tafoya-Sanchez is complex in design and highly polished.  The jar has a kiva step rim and the neck is fully polished.  The inside of the neck and the rim are slipped with mica.  Around the center of the jar is deeply carved with an avanyu encircling the piece.  The avanyu (water serpent) is a traditional design and the style of her avanyu is very similar to that of her father, Lee Tafoya (note the square head on the avanyu).  Above and avanyu are clouds and below are waves, both of which are slipped with mica.  Near the base of the jar is a deeply carved plant design, which is carved into the negative space.  The contrast of the mica and polished surfaces draws the eye to the various designs on the jar.  It is fired a deep black.  It is signed on the bottom, “Linda Tafoya-Oyenque”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
