Tafoya, Shirley – Lidded Carved Jar with Avanyu (1990s)

3.25"w x 3.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 1,500.00

Shirley Tafoya was well known for her miniature pottery.  She was the youngest daughter of Margaret Tafoya.  Each piece of her pottery was coil built, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This is a larger piece of her pottery and it combines all the elements which often make her work so unique for its size. The jar has two handles and a polished lid.  The jar is carved with an avanyu encircling the piece.   Note the depth of the carving on a piece of this size.  The rim is slipped with mica and the lid is fully polished on the top.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Shirley Cactus Blossom Tafoya”.   Over the years we did several shows with Shirley at our galleries and the quality and precision of her work was always remarkable.
