Tahbo, Mark – Large Jar with Hopi & Zuni Birds

10.25"w x 5"h

$ 3,600.00

This is a very large classic style Hopi-Tewa jar by Mark Tahbo.  The jar has a wide, round body, a high shoulder, and a slight neck.  Two sections of the jar has Zuni rainbird style designs. This is an interesting style which is seen in some of the early work of Nampeyo of Hano.  There was a period when some of the Hopi-Tewa moved to Zuni and then back to Hopi.  They brought back the white clay slips and the Zuni designs.  It was after using the Zuni designs that Nampeyo then began to utilize the Sikyatki pottery for her imagery.  The opposite sides have two birds which are interconnected. They are very intricately painted with designs on the body.  The deep red and the more traditional orange red are used on the various designs.  The black is bee-weed (a plant).  The jar is traditionally fired to create the various colorations from the heat of the fire. It is signed on the bottom with a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
