Talachy, Joe & Thelma – Large Bowl with 42 Polychrome Feathers (1970s)

Joe Talachy (b. 1943) and Thelma Talachy (b. 1942) are two of the few potters from Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico.  Thelma is a sister of Minnie Vigil, Lois Gutierrez, and Gloria Garcia.  Their daughter, Melissa Talachy, is also a well-known potter.  Each piece is coil-built and painted with natural clay slips.  This bowl is round in shape and has a flat top. The body of the bowl is slipped with a cream-colored clay.  The top is painted with 42 feathers with alternating colorations of ochre, red, and gray.  There are five different colors of clay used on this piece. . It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joe & Thelma Talachy”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
