Talachy, Joe & Thelma – Polychrome Bowl with Feather and Star Design (1970s)
Joe Talachy (b. 1943) and Thelma Talachy (b. 1942) are two of the few potters from Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico. Thelma is a sister of Minnie Vigil, Lois Gutierrez, and Gloria Garcia. Their daughter, Melissa Talachy, is also a well-known potter. Each piece is coil-built and painted with natural clay slips. This bowl utilizes five different colors of clay to create the designs. The bowl has a series of black-and-white feathers set between a larger star pattern. The design is tightly painted and the bowl was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joe & Thelma Talachy”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
