Tapia, Belen – Tall Jar with Rain and Lightning Designs (1966)
Belen Tapia was a diverse potter creating everything from painted to carved pottery. This jar was originally purchased in 1966. At that time Belen was making carved vessels. rima Belen Tapia was a nice of Sara Fina Tafoya and the mother of Anita Suazo, and Anna Archuleta. This large jar is coil built, carved, and stone polished. The neck and vase are fully polished. The central band is deeply carved with cloud, rain, and lightning designs. It is a complex and fluid design that changes as the jar is turned. It is fired a deep black. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Belen Tapia”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
