Tenorio, Robert – Large Storage Jar with Animal Designs and Lid (2003)

14.75"w x 14"h (w/ lid)

$ 2,200.00

This is an extraordinary storage jar by Robert Tenorio.  The jar is painted with wild spinach (black) on a red clay slip.  The jar has a high shoulder and a short neck.  On the outside, the jar has plant and star designs.  The outside has a very traditional Kewa appearance.  The top of the lid is painted with a butterfly pattern.  The top of the lid is in the shape of a small jar with petroglyph-style deer, antelope, and two Pueblo birds.  All seems traditional until the lid is removed!  The underside of the lid has a petroglyph Big Horn Sheep.  Peering into the jar is the extraordinary part of this jar. The bottom has a painted turtle with an impressed hand design.  Around the inner sides of the jar are fish, corn, deer, antelope, and birds!  They are painted in black with red clay highlights.  How he can get his hand into the jar and see to paint them with such precision is impressive, to say the least!  The bottom of the jar is slipped red.  The jar was traditionally fired outdoors.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Robert Tenorio, Kewa”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  The jar was made in 2003.
