Tenorio, Robert – Large Water Jar with Rainbow Designs and 7 Fish
This is a large Water jar by Robert Tenorio. The jar is painted with wild spinach (black) on a red clay slip base. The jar has a high shoulder and a short neck. On the outside, the top has a row of flower petals and rain. Below are rainbows. There is a single horizontal band that represents the earth and it has a micaceous clay slip. Near the base are additional water and lake designs. Amazingly, the jar is also painted on the inside with seven fish. I’m not quite sure how he was able to get his hand in the jar and also see to paint them! They are painted black with red clay accents. There is also a small hand design that is impressed into the clay. It’s the “surprise” of looking inside the jar that is so traditional on the outside and yet modernist on the inside. The jar is from 1999. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Robert Tenorio, Kewa”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
