Tenorio, Robert – Old-Style Black-and-Red Water Jar (2004)
This is a tall traditional water jar by Robert Tenorio. The jar is painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay. . The outside of the jar has a cloud pattern around the rim. Below are two bands of geometric shapes, often seen on historic Santo Domingo pottery from the late 1800s. Near the base are rainbow designs. The jar was traditionally fired outdoors. Note as well that the jar has a “spirit line” or a break in the painted line around the rim. This goes back to historic Kewa pottery when the artist would use the spirit line to release their spirit or connection from the vessel. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Robert Tenorio, Kewa”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
