Torivio, Dorothy – Jar with Mountain Swirl Designs (1990s)

4.5"w x 3.5"h

$ 1,000.00

This is a distinctive shape jar by Acoma potter Dorothy Torivio.  She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel.  This shape was one of her innovations as it created a surface that would allow her designs to be emphasized.  This jar has a wide shoulder and elongated neck. The triangular mountain or “sawtooh” design spirals down from the rim to the base.  It starts small and gets larger at the shoulder.  Looking down from the top reveals the amazing symmetry of her designs and how perfectly they match the form.  This is one of her simplest yet most visually striking designs.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Dorothy Torivio”.  It is definitely a classic of her pottery!
