Torivio, Dorothy – Large Long Neck Jar with Yucca Designs

7.75"w x 6"h

$ 2,000.00

This is certainly one of the most famous shapes made by Acoma potter Dorothy Torivio.  She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel.  She created this particular shape to emphasize the “op-art” painted designs so that the neck would have the smallest designs and the shoulder the largest. The form intensified her intricate painting.  The designs on this jar are yucca leaves, which are used in the painting of the designs. The white slipped clay and the tightly painted designs give the piece a strong visual appearance.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom.
