This is a classically shaped miniature by Dorothy Torivio. She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel. This a perfectly painted seed jar with a wide shape and designs on the entire surface. The jar has a wide shape and a very short neck. It was the short neck which allowed Dorothy to emphasize the intricacy of her painting. The imagery is a butterfly pattern which encircles the piece. Each of the “butterflies” is a combination of four of the elliptical designs. The seedpot is signed on the bottom, “Dorothy Torivio” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
