Trujillo, Mary and Leonard – Storyteller with Thirteen Children (1980s)

7.5"w x 11"h

$ 1,100.00

Mary Tapia Trujillo was originally from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. She married Leonard Trujillo (1936- 2017) of Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make storyteller figurines from her mother-in-law, Helen Cordero.  Her pieces are made in the traditional Cochiti style.  This storyteller is a classic of her pieces both in figure and the number of children.  This piece is a male storyteller surrounded by thirteen kids.  It is painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay slips.  The figure has detailed painting on the shirt and note his braids. It is signed on the bottom, “Mary + Leonard Trujillo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Definitely a more complex and important piece of their work!
