Tse-Pe, Dora – Long Neck Jar with Carved Avanyu & Turquoise (2000s)
This is a classic tall neck jar by Dora Tse-Pe. She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law Rose Gonzales and continued her work in a similar style of carving. The jar is a combination of polished and matte slips along with mica. The rim and shoulder are slipped with mica. The neck and base are polished red. The design is a cameo style carved avanyu. There is also a black matte band around the neck with a band of turquoise hei-shi inset above and below. She inset a large piece of turquoise as is the eye of the avanyu. The jar is perfectly polished, which is what Dora was known for in her pottery! The piece was made in the early 2000s. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dora of San Ildefonso”.
