Vallo, Leland – Corrugated Neck Jar with Mimbres Lizards and Bears (1990s)
Leland Vallo was a son of noted potter, Marie Vallo, and the brother of Kim Vallo. He learned to make pottery from his mother and began making pottery in 1991. This jar is coil built, thin-walled, and intricately painted. The jar has a corrugated rim, where the clay is indented. This is the first time I’ve seen one of Leland’s with the corrugated rim and, much like his other pottery, the corrugation is small, tight, and precise. The jar is painted with four medallions. There are two Mimbres lizards and two Pueblo bears. The remainder of the jar is fully designed. Below the shoulder is a classic Tularosa Swirl design in black-and-white. The jar is signed on the bottom, “L. Vallo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
