Pablita Velarde (1918-2006) was among the first women painters from the Pueblos.  This painting is from 1998.  It is one of her “earth paintings”.  Pablita would use rocks and minerals and grind them up into a powder to make her paints. The style was inspired by Navajo sandpaintings.  This painting has four Mimbres turtles.  Each one has a different design on its back.  The painting comes in the original frame.  It is signed, “Pablita Velarde, 1998”.
