Whitegeese, Daryl – Large Red and Tan Bowl with Avanyu

8.5"w x 6.25"h

This is a striking larger red and tan bowl by Daryl Whitegeese.  He is known for his use of traditional Santa Clara shapes and designs.  This is a round bowl and fully carved.  The top and bottom are polished a deeper red coloration. The central area is a water serpent (avanyu) which encircles the piece.  The avanyu is polished tan which is always difficult to create. The tan areas are where water (not clay slip) is applied to the surface of the piece and then stone polished.  Push to hard and it is streaky but not hard enough and it won’t have a shine.  This bowl has an amazing coloration for both the red and tan areas. The tan area, especially, fired perfectly with an almost caramel-candy like coloration.  There is the traditional cream-colored clay which he has used in the recessed areas which have been carved out.  The second to the last photo is the white clay used to fill in the carved areas.  Typical for his work, the edges are very sharp and create a strong contrast to the matte slipped background.  Daryl has won numerous awards for his pottery including “Best of Pottery” at the 2015 and 2019 Heard Indian Markets.   The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay.  The last photo is Daryl with the bowl.
