Williams, Lorraine – Round Jar with Corrugated Cloud Designs

8"w x 8.5"h

$ 450.00

This is an intricately designed jar by Lorraine Williams.  The piece is coil-built with a round body and a short neck.  The area below the shoulder is slipped red. The area around the shoulder incised clouds in a corrugated style.  They are very tightly etched or impressed into the clay.  Above the clouds is a rainbow band and then a larger band of triangular corrugation.  The tight design not only creates shadows and depth but fantastic texture to the piece!  The jar was painted with red and black to accentuate the designs and then traditionally fired to create the surface coloration.  The jar was traditionally fired to create the coloration from the smoke on the surface.  After the piece is fired it is covered in pinon-pitch.  The pitch is a reminder of the historic Navajo pottery when it was utilitarian.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “LW”.  Lorraine has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as “A Legacy of Generations”.
