Williams, Sue Ann – 9″ Tall Water Jar with Stars and Raised Rain Bands

8.5"w x 9.25"h

$ 675.00

Sue Williams is a daughter of Rose Williams and a sister of Susie Crank and Alice Cling.  This is an exceptional piece of her pottery.  This large water jar is coil-built, stone polished, and traditionally fired. The jar has a low, sharp shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim.  There are large star patterns incised into the clay.  There are also two large “rain bands” extending from the rim to the shoulder.  They are also fully polished and give the jar a creative appearance.  As interesting as the shape and design is the firing coloration. The jar is lighter on the neck and darker near the base.  The firing accentuates the shape and the design!  The jar was traditionally fired to create the coloration on the surface and afterward covered in pinon pitch.  This was a traditional method historically to make the pottery waterproof. Today, potters continue this process as a testament to the past. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Susie Williams”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
