Wilson, Jimmy – 12″ Tall Jar with Buffalo and Sun Designs

8"w x 12"h

$ 875.00

Jimmy Wilson (b. 1935)  is from Leupp, Arizona, and from the Naakaii dine-e Clan (Wandering).  He began making pottery in 1974-5 and learned from Faye Tso, who is a clan relative. This large jar is coil-built and thin-walled. The jar is incised with cloud, mountain, and water designs around the neck.  Around the center is a traditional Navajo-style buffalo and sun design.  This imagery is repeated twice.  The designs are all incised into the clay before firing and the two colorations are from different clay slips on the surface.  Jimmy uses shallow, incised cut in the clay to make his designs.  The tall jar is traditionally fired which creates the coloration on the surface and then covered in pinon-pitch after the firing.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jimmy Wilson”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Today Jimmy makes almost no pottery, but his work remains creative and distinctive.
