Yazzie, Angie – Large Micaceous Square Bowl with Cloud Cut-Outs

13" long x 10"w x 2.75"h

$ 2,300.00

Angie Yazzie is renowned for her thin-walled Taos pottery. Each piece is coil-built and made from micaceous clay from near Taos Pueblo.  Angie focuses on traditional shapes along with making each piece nearly paper-thin!  It almost feels like there is nothing there when you hold one! This is one of her famous “square” bowls.  The piece has flat sides but on this one, she has cut-out cloud designs.  This is always a risky technique as the clay has to be wet enough to cut through but dry enough to maintain the form and not crack. The interesting part of the cut-outs is the shadows they cast!  You can see them in the photos but also in the last photo where Angie is holding the bowl.  They are a nice surprise!  The bowl is made from micaceous clay so when it is fired it has a sparkling/metallic appearance.  Angie fires her pieces using wood, so it is a different firing process than Santa Clara blackware.  The result is that you can very slightly see the fire clouds on the surface of the piece.  That is a great addition, as it speaks to the traditional firing methods!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Angie Yazzie”.  She has won numerous awards for her work, including “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2017.
