Yepa, Alvina – Large Jar with Avanyu, Feather, and Corn Designs

Alvina Yepa (b. 1954) learned to make pottery from her mother, Felipita Nonche Yepa.  She began making pottery in the 1980s and in 1987 won First Place and Best of Division for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market.  This large jar is coil-built and fully polished red.  Above the shoulder are etched feathers.  Around the shoulder are an etched avanyu, corn, and feather designs.  It is a complex piece for the size with a lot of various design work on the surface.  The size and detail of the etched designs are striking!  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Alvina Yepa”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
