Christopher Youngblood creates intricately carved vessels that reflect a perfect balance of matte and polished surfaces with intricately carved designs. This large bowl has 32 different sections of swirling water designs.  The piece is entitled, “Pueblo Waters” and certainly suggests keeping in mind the importance of water in Pueblo culture and life. The top of the bowl is fully carved and stone polished in sections.  The swirls are rounded and meant to look like swirling water. The interior is slipped with mica, which creates a visual “shimmer” that almost looks like light reflecting off the surface of the water.  Chris said he designed the bowl so that each of the swirls was different, creating constant motion for the eye.  It also works to visually draw the eye to the top of the bowl and across the entire surface.  The bottom of the bowl is slipped with mica. The piece was traditionally fired and the polished areas have a glassy appearance.   It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Chris Youngblood”.  I’m pleased that I have been working with Chris since 2010 when I wrote the first article on him for Native People’s magazine.  It is exciting to see how his work has progressed over the years and the awards for his pottery, including the 2104 “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market and 2021 “Best of Pottery” at Gallup Ceremonials.  He was featured in the book, Spoken Through Clay, and continues to be one of the leading young potters working today.
