Youngblood-Lugo, Sergio – “Corn Meal” Polychrome Bowl
$ 2,800.00
Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood. He learned to make pottery from his mother. Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This piece combines nearly every technique, including carving, etching, painting, and polishing. There are matt, micaceous and polished surfaces. The piece is his first “cornmeal” bowl, which is inspired by traditional pieces used to hold cornmeal. The base is polished. The front has rounded coils that are carved to look like a basket. There is a polished star with carved feathers. But look closer, and the carved feather area is also incised and then painted with black clay! The back of the piece has a kiva step shape with an opening for “removing the corn meal”. The inside is fully slipped with mica. The piece was traditionally fired with a rich coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
