This is a large bowl by Nancy Youngblood from 1997. The entire piece is fully carved and note the depth of the carving! Around the neck are 32 evenly carved feathers. Around the shoulder is a water serpent or avanyu. The body of the avanyu swirls around the piece with cloud and rain designs. The piece is very is highly polished. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Nancy Youngblood Lugo”.
Nancy said of her water serpents:
“The curved-down horn is the female avanyu and the kiva-step horn is the male avanyu. I love to carve. That is my favorite process in the whole pottery making.” Nancy Youngblood, Spoken Through Clay
