Youngblood, Nancy & Christopher Youngblood – Cloud Swirls Jar with Flame Lid (2023)

5"w x 8"h (w/ lid)

$ 6,500.00

This is an exceptional collaborative piece by Nancy Youngblood and her son, Christopher Youngblood. The bowl was made by Chris and there are four spiral clouds. Two of the clouds are a spiral with nine carved sections.  Each of the sections is stone polished.  The other two are cloud spirals with a single circular spiral that circles around five times. The circular spirals may seem simple, but they are difficult to polish and keep rounded out and they have to be fully polished at one time!  The surrounding area is matte, which is perfectly sanded and smoothed so that it creates an even tonality with no variations in surface depths.  The lid was made by Nancy Youngblood.  It is one of her famous “flame” lids which consists of tightly carved melon ribs on both sides.  Each side has seven swirling ribs, deeply carved and highly polished.  The lid sits perfectly on the carved inside edge of the bowl.  Both pieces were traditionally fired and are a striking glossy black coloration.  This collaboration brings together two exceptional potters in one piece.  The bowl is signed by Chris and the lid by Nancy.  It is exciting to see the variation and complementary creativity of these the two amazing potters!
