Nancy Youngblood is one of the great names in Pueblo pottery.  Her technical expertise has redefined expectations of quality in how pottery is carved and designed.  This is her first jar using dragonflies as the motif.  Dragonflies often has a very spiritual essence and are associated with prayers.  This jar has four dragonflies.  Each is deeply carved and the bodies and wings are made up of her famous melon ribs.  Each rib is carved and fully polished.  There is additional micaceous clay used on the bodies to create a visual contrast to the polished surface.  The top carved area of the jar is matte. The jar has been traditionally fired and the coloration of the red and mica is striking. The time involved in polishing the ribs is extraordinary, as each rib has two sides, creating a very high volume of surface area on even a small piece!  Nancy has won “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market and the New Mexico Governor’s Award.  Today, her pottery continues to have the same creative and innovative spirit which has made each piece so exciting over the years!
