Youngblood, Nancy – Red Flame Design Bowl
Nancy Youngblood is known for her swirl melon bowls and carved pottery. This bowl combines the techniques of carving the ribs with a more abstract style of design. Here, Nancy has used the ribs to create a flame design that spirals up from the base. Actually, take a moment to look at the photo of the bottom of this piece. It shows how deeply carved the design is into the clay as well as the sharpness of the ribs! The design has the “flames” flowing up from the base. Reaching to the rim and curling around. The top is rag polished tan and the area behind the ribs is also tan, which creates a striking contrast with the polished red. The red on this piece is a deep, rich coloration. As you look at the photos, consider that each rib has two “sides” to be polished and the surface area of the piece is about double its size! Nancy has won numerous awards for her melon bowls, and this is undoubtedly an amazing example of her skill! The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Nancy Youngblood”.
