Youngblood, Nancy – Red Jar with Male and Female Thunderbirds

3.25"w x 5"h

$ 7,500.00

This is a visually striking jar by Nancy Youngblood.  It is inspired by the imagery of Thunderbirds in both Pueblo and Native culture.  The jar has both a male and a female Thunderbird. They are deeply carved into the clay with the wings and body derived from classic melon ribs.  The ribs flow around the jar creating a sense of motion to each of the birds.  Note near the base the raindrop carved into the clay!  Note the depth of the carving on the jar and the deep coloration of the red polished surfaces. It is a striking contrast of the deep red with the matte tan background.  Nancy has also used a variety of carving styles to accentuate the bodies and movement of the birds! It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Nancy Youngblood”
