This jar by Nathan Youngblood is complex in form and carving. The jar has a fluted or, “raindrop rim” which undulates around the opening. The body of the ajr is fully carved with two large medallions.  One medallion has clouds and the harvest moon with a matte surface. The opposite side has a maze design with a cross in the center.  Separating the two medallions are three rows of carving on each side.  They have cloud and walking bear paw designs in the polished sections. They are contrasted with the micaceous cloud sections which then create bands that encircle the medallions.  There is an amazing amount of carving for the size of the jar!  The carved designs are large but striking in appearance. The top and bottom sections are fully polished to Nathan’s glass-like appearance.  Simple. Elegant.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay “Nathan Youngblood” and the hallmark of his name in Tewa.
