Youngblood, Nathan – Red and Tan Double Avanyu Bowl

7.5"w x 3.5"h

$ 5,500.00

This is a deeply carved tri-color flat bowl by Nathan Youngblood.  The bowl is carved with two avanyu, or water serpents, on the top of the piece.  They are deeply carved into the clay and polished to a deep red coloration. The bottom of the bowl is polished tan.  The bowl was traditionally fired to a glassy appearance.  On Nathan’s red pieces, after they are fired, he uses screwdrivers to scrape the background area and the side of the carving.  This can take almost as much time as the carving or polishing itself!  Amazing the amount of time that goes into each vessel and yet how stunning they appear!  It is signed on the bottom in the clay with his name and hallmarked name in Tewa, which means “Deer Path”.
