This teardrop-shaped plate is a complex carved piece by Nathan Youngblood. The plate is his distinctive “teardrop” shape for which he has created his own puki (form to start the plate or bowl).  This piece is coil-built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired.  The design is a central medallion of a sun and cloud pattern.  Surrounding it are cloud and rain designs which are both polished and slipped with mica.  The rim of the plate is also fully polished.  Nathan’s black pieces often achieve a “water-like” appearance to the polished surface, which gives them their own distinctive shine.  The plate is signed on the back in the clay “Nathan Youngblood” and his hallmark which are deer tracks, which symbolize his name in Tewa.
