Youngblood, Nathan – Tri-Color Bowl with Nine Rain Clouds

9.25"w x 5"h

$ 9,800.00

This is a deeply carved tri-color bowl by Nathan Youngblood.  The piece is fully carved and polished, deep red, tan, and buff.  The design has nice kiva step rainclouds encircling the piece.  The final section is a single rain cloud which is polished a deep red.  It is surrounded by a matte section which Nathan calls the raincloud’s “protective aura”.  As the bowl is turned, there are small etched arrows, deer tracks, and “points of origin” which speak to tracking in the rain.  The red is deep in coloration and striking on the bowl.  The bowl is traditionally fired and on Nathan’s red pieces, after they are fired, he uses screwdrivers to scrape the background area and the side of the carving.  This can take almost as much time as the carving or polishing itself!  Amazing the amount of time that goes into each vessel and yet how stunning they appear!  It is signed on the bottom in the clay with his name and hallmarked name in Tewa, which means “Deer Path”.
