Dorothy Ami is known for her traditional style of Hopi-Tewa pottery. She is related to Mark Tahbo, and he taught her to make pottery. This jar has a round shoulder and elongated neck. It is painted with bee-weed (black) and a deep red clay slip. There are cloud, rain, and lightning designs. The jar was traditionally fired to create various blushes on the surface. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, ‘Dorothy Ami” and a pipe for Tobacco Clan.

Dorothy Ami is a Hopi-Twea potter who creates beautiful shapes and designs using traditional clay, pigments, and brushes made from yucca. Dorothy is a cousin of noted Hopi-Tewa potter Mark Tahbo and Debbie Clashin. She learned to make pottery from Mark Tahbo. She is well known for her thin walled pottery and firing her wares to achieve beautiful areas of blush.
