Diane Lewis-Garcia is known for her tightly painted miniature pottery.  This is one of her very intricately painted mini water jars.  The jar has a wide shoulder and a short neck.  The top of the shoulder has two butterflies painted in the design.  There is one butterfly with a wing raised in relief.  The butterflies are all separated by thin lines.  The jar has handles, each with a lizard painted on them.  The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and a variety of colors of natural clay slips.   The coloration and detail create a very striking piece!  It is signed on the bottom, “D. Lewis”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Diane Lewis is a daughter of Kathleen Lewis and a sister of noted potters Rebecca Lucario, Marilyn Ray, Judy Lewis, and Carolyn Concho. She is known for her miniature pottery and the use of traditional and Mimbres imagery. She has won numerous awards at the Heard Museum Market and Gallup Ceremonials.
